Ahead, the void stretched, punctured by distant, swirling nebulae. He chewed a piece of piss gum, the sharp, acrid taste cutting through the dry, recycled air of the cosmic trail. John: "Easy now, girl." He patted the horse's neck, the familiar motion calming them both as the path narrowed between two floating asteroids. The piss gum's bitterness kept his mind sharp, a necessary distraction from the infinite drop on either side. A figure emerged from behind a larger rock, mounted on a similar star-traveling horse. Their broad-brimmed hat hid their face, but the hand resting on their pistol was clear. Stranger: "That's far enough, traveler. The King's Road isn't free to use." The stranger's voice was rough, weathered by the void. John: "I pay my dues same as any man. Let me pass." His hand drifted toward his own weapon, the worn leather of the holster creaking softly. The horse shifted beneath him, sensing the tension. Stranger: "Dues are double for solo riders. Too many vanish out here. Call it a insurance." The figure nudged their horse forward, closing the distance. The pistol gleamed dully under the starlight. John spat the gum into the void. It spun away, a tiny dark speck against the cosmos. His fingers curled around the grip of his gun.
